This summer on June 14th / 15th I will be taking part in my first Love Hope Strength climb on American soil when I will be making the journey to Colorado to ascend Vail Mountain as part of the Vail Rocks event weekend.

I would love it if some of you Love Hope Strength supporters, Alarm and Big Country fans would consider making the journey with me.

It promises to be a unique weekend with the chance to not only see Big Country perform live in Denver at the Marquis Theater on the Friday night (followed by the hike in Vail the next morning), but an opportunity to witness a Mike Peters solo ‘Acoustic Alarm’ show on the Saturday evening on the Mountain Stage in Vail as well.

Vail Rocks is fast becoming an integral part of the LHS worldwide calendar of events and I’m so excited to be climbing there this summer. Ben  Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain, rising 1,344 metres (4,406 ft) above sea level around the hills and Monroes of the Scottish Highlands.  The route up and down Ben Nevis is about nine miles in total and we will be climbing via the  ‘Mountain Track’ or the ‘Tourist Track’.  Details of the walk can be found here

The normal time taken to climb to the top by the tourist path is three and a half to five hours – coming down is much faster, between one and a half to two and a half hours.

Although this is a physically challenging event, it will be a hugely rewarding personal experience that we would like you to be a part of. Everyone should attempt to conquer Ben Nevis at least once in their lifetime!!.

Last year, Ben Nevis Rocks raised over £25,000 which will be going to cancer projects in the Scottish Highlands area and towards our new ‘Get On the List’ campaign, which will be recruiting bone marrow donors to the register using the swab techinique.  Last year, over 150 trekkers climbed Ben Nevis and were  rewarded by a very moving performance at the summit, where Mike read a list of those people that had been lost to cancer and those who were currently receiving treatment.

We are again asking walkers to wear a piece of green (our charity signature colour), on the trek, to enable us to raise awareness by ‘Saving Lives – One Concert At A Time’.

Snowdon Rocks 7, features a fundraising trek to the Snowdon summit following the Llanberis/Railway Path with intimate performances along the way from Mike Peters and other Love Hope Strength Foundation supporting musicians.

All of us at Love Hope Strength both here in the UK and the USA have worked long and hard to get the swab testing into the UK and to be able to register people from 17 to 55 years of age, so it was a very exciting moment for Love Hope Strength Foundation at the first ‘Get On The List’ cheek swab bone marrow drive
in the UK at Bournemouth. In fact, co-founder Mike Peters himself ended up singing before the gig at the LHS booth before he had even taken to the stage with The Alarm!!

During The Alarm tour, fans and members of The Alarm including James Stevenson, Craig Adams and Smiley joined the list to potentially become a life savers.  Our first person to GET ON THE LIST, was super volunteer, Jackie Collins.  We also met Joe, the venue manager at the Oxford Academy, who had recently been a match and successful donated his bone marrow.

Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK every 18 minutes.  

Every 10 minutes blood cancer takes a life somewhere in the world.

For many blood cancer patients, a stem cell donation from a healthy person is their only chance of survival, but only half of the people diagnosed in the UK find a matching donor.

The only chance of survival for people who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer, and for whom conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy have proven ineffective is to find a stem cell donor. The odds of finding someone are often very slim.

Working in partnership with Delete Blood Cancer we want to help them to increase the number of potential stem cell donors in the UK to provide people who have been diagnosed with blood cancer a second chance of life. We believe that no one who is in need of a stem cell donor should die needlessly because one cannot be found.

Love Hope Strength Foundation and Delete Blood Cancer UK are delighted to announce their new partnership which will be launched on The Alarm tour during March 2013.

The new partnership will enable people between the ages of 17 and 55  to sign up to the stem cell donor register by filling in a form and using swabs to give some cheek cell samples for tissue analysis. A simple sign up, yet it could save a life!

Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer in UK every 18 minutes, every 10 minutes blood cancer takes a life somewhere in the world. In the UK around 50% of patients never find the lifesaving match they need. To be considered a match the donor and patient must have at least eight out of 10 tissue characteristics (HLA) in common, but ideally should have 10.

Delete Blood Cancer UK launched on February 19^th 2013 with a single vision, to delete blood cancer by finding a donor for everyone in need of a donor, by empowering people to take action, give stem cells and save lives.  Delete Blood Cancer UK is part of the DKMS family of organisations which has grown to become the world’s largest bone marrow centre.

Since 2008, Love Hope Strength USA has been working in partnership with Delete Blood Cancer US, and have been undertaking donor recruitment drives at a range of cultural events through a campaign called ‘GET ON THE LIST’.  So far they have recruited 30,000 potential donors to the USA register. There have been nearly 500 potentially lifesaving matches between donors and patients in need so far in those five years.  We are now in a position to replicate this exciting ‘GET ON THE LIST’ campaign in the UK now.

Audience members can sign up to ‘GET ON THE LIST’ during all of the gigs throughout the Alarm tour and some day they may be the one to save a life, and help the mission to prevent thousands of people dying from blood cancer every year.
